Emotional intelligence can greatly impact your work life and career, so itââ¬â¢s important to understand exactly what it is and why it is so important. What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)? EI is the extent to which one is in tune with their emotions as well as others around them. Negative employee affect can reduce productivity and positive organizational climate, essentially affecting the bottom line. It is important to consider the managers mood in the organization because your managerââ¬â¢s mood can be a factor to how you perform your task. For instance, a good managers mood will improve self-efficiency and motivation to employees and give positive moods transfer to their subordinates who turn it into OCBs (Williams Shiaw, 1999, p. 664). OCBs occur when employees voluntarily perform special behaviours or go above and beyond what is expected of them in order to benefit the organization. These are desired behaviours that set successful companies apart from unsuccessful ones. Therefore, your managerââ¬â¢s mood is important to foster a positive working climate. One model of how the managerââ¬â¢s mood can influence the employeeââ¬â¢s mood is through mood contagion. Mood contagion. Mood contagion occurs when someone unintentionally mimics the mood of another person (Zedeck et al., 2005, p. 296). The study by Zedeck et al. (2005) discovered that ââ¬Å"...individuals with leaders in a positive mood experienced more positive moods and less negative moods after interacting with the leader than did individuals with leaders in a negative moodâ⬠(Zedeck et al., 2005, p. 302). Therefore, this managerââ¬â¢s mood has serious implications for employees. EIT should be provided so leaders with positive affect energize their employees.
